Music Sales Signs Dustin O'Halloran
We are very pleased to announce the signing of the uniquely talented Dustin O’Halloran. Having studied piano from age seven, O’Halloran’s personal histories give us some clue as to the thickly-woven tapestries of his music: he has lived in Los Angeles (where he studied art at Santa Monica College and formed the much-adored Devis with Sarah Lov), Italy (in the depths of rural Emilia Romagna) and Berlin. Fittingly, his latest album Lumiere is full of those rare elements of life shared by both vibrant cities and lush countrysides – color, both organic and rich, sensorial intrigue and a deep awareness of space, here all delivered with an understated and sophisticated grace. Born at the intersection of ambient music, dream pop and minimalism, Lumiere is O’Halloran’s first venture into the richer textures and voicing of classical chamber music. (Previous studio releases are Piano Solos 1 and 2). Dustin is soon to venture out on a North American tour in support of the album.
O’Halloran compares his musical approach to visual art – “Somehow in composing I had always viewed the work similar to how a painter would approach it, adding colors, texture, adding space, painting over the whole thing and maybe leaving just a corner.”
Lumiere is a superb contribution to O’Halloran’s personal canon, and its February 22, 2011 release on FatCat Records sits neatly alongside some great career highs, including writing music for Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette (2006) and William Olsen’s An American Affair (2010) and performing at New York’s Guggenheim Museum’s Kandinsky retrospective for their 50th Anniversary Gala. Directors continue to be struck by the seductive, filmic qualities of O’Halloran’s melodies; he most recently scored Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy, which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at 2011’s Sundance Festival.
