Following the success of his first major orchestral work Luminescence, premiered by the BBC Philharmonic, Joby Talbot, born in 1971, has gone on to receive numerous commissions from organizations such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta and the BBC Proms.
A versatile composer of enviable talent, Talbot is also highly acclaimed for his music for film and TV. For the concert hall he has scored Hitchcock’s silent classic The Lodger and Evgeny Bauer’s The Dying Swan. Both films are presented live with accompanying instrumental ensemble. Screen credits include cult television comedy series The League of Gentlemen. His work for cinema includes the scores for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Son of Rambow with director Garth Jennings and more recently he has added Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Franklyn, and Is There Anybody There? to his list of credits.
Joby has his own performing ensemble which showcases his chamber music, often involving collaborations with visual artists. In 2008 Joby composed Eau, a tour de force for orchestra and solo concertante group, further revealing his highly developed craft as a formidable orchestral writer. Joby’s music appeals to Europe’s top choreographers. Chroma for the Royal Ballet and Wayne McGregor included music from Aluminium, the album of music by the White Stripes that he produced and arranged. Joby is writing an evening length piece for Christopher Wheeldon and the Royal Ballet and is developing an important collaboration for the stage at Sadler’s Wells in London for 2012.
